What to do with a 4yr old

I have this dilemma pritty much every 12months. I look at my son and realise he has out grown his toys and activities. I have no idea what I am meant to be doing with him at this age. He is still playing with his toddler activities, surely he is bored and ready for a more challenging activity? But what do i get him? The older they get the harder this question is to answer. I feel like toys are aimed at under 3yr olds. After that they are either action figures or things with remotes like car tracks. Those to me aren't what I envision for every day play. As a toddler they have such beautiful activities, posting shapes into a box, blocks, balls, dolls. When i type in toys for preschool kids i get learning games, counting and learning letters. It feels like they get to 4yrs old and suddenly its all about school. Im really struggling to find activities that are ongoing for him. Sure he can ride a bike or draw but thats only two activities. the only thing i can come up with is Magna Tiles (rrp $199!) or really big building blocks which ain't cheap either. So please, mothers, fathers, grandparents, aunts and uncles, hit me with your toy ideas for this age. What do your kids play with the most??
